I have been researching these incidents because of the constant claims by paraglider pilots that paragliding is as "safe" as hang gliding. I believe I might have found about 20% of the actual numbers worldwide. Note that safety has not improved measurably since 2006. Although woefully incomplete, these numbers at this point are similar to the reported totals of hang gliding accidents in the early 1970s -- before tip deflexors eliminated the full luff dive. Also, it is obvious that most paragliding fatalities appear to result from airfoil failures within the PDMC.

Roland took off on September 13, at 3 p.m. on the Beldersay launch site, and flew east, and was last seen around Mount Chimgan. Apparently he himself said before launch that the wind was quite strong. He was not heard of, and Uzbek paragliders together with the Ministry of Emergencies launched a comprehensive search effort. According to various sources he was found on September 16, in the morning, by a helicopter. First reports suggest that he died on impact, and that he appeared tangled in his lines. (This is preliminary; some of the tangling may have been postaccident. We also do not know whether a reserve was deployed.) Roland was apparently flying his Firebird Hornet. Those who knew him will agree that Roland was an excellent pilot, with more than 15 years of experience, flying all across Africa and doing some exceptional flights in the Caucasus. We have been flying with him for more than three years, and intensely valued his excellent judgment.

A London man plunged to his death in a paragliding accident in Argentina when he slipped loose from his harness. He plummeted 70.15 metres to the ground after he became detached from his instructor as his brother and best friend looked on. A paramedic from the Royal Navy was lowered to the unfortunate man to treat his injuries. An A&E Consultant from Paisley’s Royal Alexandra Hospital who had been picked up on the way by the air ambulance was also able to reach the man and found that he had suffered spinal and other traumatic injuries. Robert Ellis died on December 4, 2007, of complications arising from a paragliding accident in Utah. Ellis had suffered a broken leg in a paragliding accident after he crashed on the west side of Monroe Mountain in the south-central portion of the state on November 17th of last year. Sevier County (Utah) Search and Rescue responded and transported Ellis off the mountain, where he was later transported by ambulance to Sevier Valley Hospital. A blood clot formed from the injury, which ultimately took Ellis' life.

Bozeman Paragliding owner Andy Macrae said he suspected a gust of wind swirled Call around and caused part of his canopy to collapse, spinning him sideways into the mountain at a high rate of speed.

After a messy exit from a deep spiral, he had a full stall, the glider flew under, he fell into the glider and apparently got tangled in the lines. This happened at more than 500m above sea level. He did not deploy the reserve. Apparently, he died as a result of impacting the water (due to rupture if internal organs).
