I instantly got in to some massive sink with the glider pitching al over the place. I decided to head straight towards the beach area to land. As I flew out it was obvious I was heading downwind. I still had good height to make landing so carried on as there was no way I was going to make it back to launch. Bam! A big frontal collapse dropping me way below the ridge with the glider being ground sucked to the rocks. By now I was only 200 feet from the ground and a long way from the safety of the beach!
At this point I knew it was game over and my only option was to find somewhere suitable to land and quickly as the glider was racing downwind rapidly. Like all professionals in the moment of madness I quickly switched on the bullet
as I knew the landing would be exciting. As I surveyed my options it became clear there were none, as I turned the corner some 800 feet below take off I opted for the narrow road that runs along the base of the Orme, as I lined myself up I noticed a car heading towards me and thought what are the chances of that! I then noticed a small flat piece of concrete beside the edge of the road and thought there is my landing strip, Bam, too late I pile in to the side of the cliff, my wing overshoots the wall by the road and I promptly fall off the wall to my right and plunge 30 feet to the rocks below. Lucky for me my wing saved me by slowing the fall, the downside of this was I snapped almost every line in the process.
I then found out that almost everyone had interesting flights down and fast landings as the wind had switched opposite directions. I got away with this incident without a scratch or bruise.
My wing is now in need of a complete set of new lines and one upper cell will need replacing, considering I walked away I just don’t care."
