It happened on 2 of September of 2007 in Madalena do Mar in Madeira Island. A German pilot and U-Turn dealer Hartmut Peters crashed into another pilot with revenge purposes. For some years now Hartmut had some quarrel with another pilot, Avelino Silva. This pilot wasn’t flying for quite some time, and when Hartmut noticed this pilot on the air (glider colours) he flew about 700m to meet the Portuguese pilot, which he did, after a deep spiral. He was in a very fast glider and the Avelino was on a 1-2, he tried to escape but it was no use. First he circled him, hitting with his wingtips, and then he came from behind and crashed his glider into the pilot, wrapping him fully. And after this he tried to hit him again, but he lost some height because he had a collapse after the main collision. They were both lucky that there were no injuries. I was there along with 3 other pilots and saw everything. We are now eyewitnesses and the whole process is now in judicial level. I say revenge proposes because Hartmut himself told me that he just wanted a chance to get him flying, at the time I didn’t believe he could do the things he said, and I laughed thinking it was just humour. The other guy had the scare of his life, and he’s not flying anymore. Hartmut told the police that he was thermalling about 70m (this was the height the event took place) above a beach, and the other pilot just didn’t respect thermal rules, do you believe?? He was about 700m distance and 500m high from this 70m beach thermal, and still he spiral down and travelled 700m for a beach thermal??
Here goes a signed public statement condemning Hartmut Peters attitude by our local paragliding community who were brave enough to not accept such an atrocity making our sport more dangerous than it really needs to be. Members in this forum can translate the document if there is any doubt of my statement.
