Raul Rodriguez was on a visit in Innsbruck last week. He was spending most of his time on fine-tuning the ROLLING together with Nova test pilot Alex Höllwarth. The ROLLING is a beginner acro glider. Raul tried many different trim- and brake settings for all the acro manoeuvres. Alex was checking if the flight behaviour was within the limits for the EN / LTF certification.
The work with Raul was very productive and it was impressive to watch the top class flying of the pilot who invented almost all existing acro manoeuvres. For sure, the Rofan (our main testing area) has never seen such perfect acro flying. :-)
Raul was even trying an infinity tumbling with the ROLLING but he was stopped by a massive collapse on the third rotation. An other try confirmed what we had all expected: Infinity tumblings don't work on a beginner acro glider.
Raul mentioned later, that he can only be sure, that something doesn't work, if he actually tries it with all his commitment. Besides his outstanding feeling for the glider, this inner drive to try, what seems impossible, might be a reason for Rauls formative role in acro flying.
Raul didn't just work on the ROLLING last week. He also did some flights with the MATRIX, a freestlye acro glider with rather little aspect ratio, and with the RADIX, his competition acro wing. The thermals were quite strong and Raul perfectly executed all of the acro manoeuvres which exist, and he tried some things which don't exist yet. :-)
So the future of acro flying seems to be very exiting, and we count ourselves lucky to work together with the most formative pilot of this movement.
