Intelligence agencies have warned the state police and security agencies about the possibility of terrorists using paragliders to carry out sensational aerial attacks on high-value targets.
The warning was issued after evidence emerged of a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) member buying an Israeli-made paraglider in China.
Sources said that the LeT terrorist bought a glider made by Apco, a company renowned for its range of parachutes and paragliders.
A PTI report, however, paints a scarier picture: that the LeT reportedly bought 50 para-gliders from Europe. This set off alarm bells in the government that it could lead to airborne suicide attacks.
Authoritative sources told DNA that an LeT member bought a cheaper paraglider from China, probably for practice. Apco and some other companies are known to manufacture a range of parachutes and powered gliders that can be controlled to land at specific targets.
Intelligence sources who have looked at the threat in detail said they do not believe that the terrorists could be using unpowered aircraft, meaning parachutes, or unpowered gliders, given their limited mobility and accuracy.
They believe that the terrorists could be looking at deploying powered para-gliders, which would provide extreme accuracy. The para-motoring can be done by a person tying a motor to his back and using the paraglider’s wings to further his flight.
The powered paragliders can be used to launch a terrorist from a cliff-top or a high-rise and target high-value zones in New Delhi or a nuclear plant.
The Union home ministry has issued a detailed warning to state police forces. In view of this, security agencies have carried out mock drills in different parts of the country to deal with airborne suicide attacks.
